Urban Landscapes

Evelyn Kutschera's urban landscapes project poses a myriad of paradoxes, presenting human-made landscapes in an anonymous manner, without the presence of any humans in the photographs.

Human manipulations of organic plants, soil, and erosion are showcased in a manner that are guaranteed to inspire questions about the role of both nature in civilization and how the influence of humans alters the natural world at large.

Although the photographs in this project pose philosophical questions, Ms. Kutschera's approach is decidedly unsentimental; in this project, she was inspired by the new topographics mindset of the 1970's, but her subject matter is purely contemporary. Ultimately, she seeks to inspire us to meditate on what our responsibilities are as humans living in an ecosystem and whether it is possible for us to coexist with natural environments.
